High School Playbook

The Mason High School football program has a new head coach.  On Monday, November 23rd, the school named Brian Castner as the new man for the job.

Castner, a strength training and health teacher at Mason, has plenty of coaching experience.  He has spent the past three seasons as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for St. Xavier High School.  Prior to that, he served as a varsity football assistant at Mason from 2001-2006. 

Castner has also served as the head softball coach at Mason, where he led the Comets to the state Final Four twice in the last three years. 

“We appreciate Brian’s plan to build a successful football program in Mason that is grounded in self-respect and community-- developing leaders not only on the field, but off the field.  I am confident that he will continue the tradition and commitment to Mason’s student athletes,” said athletic director Scott Stemple.

The Mason Board of Education will take formal action on his contract at its next regular meeting on December 15.

Mason’s Zach Wills proved once again that he is the best in Ohio.  Wills won his second consecutive Division I state cross country championship on Saturday, Nov. 7. He circled the 5K course at Scioto Downs in 15 minutes, 45.11 seconds, four seconds faster than runner-up Conner Paez of Solon.  Will’s led the entire race earning the Comet’s the coveted 1-point on a very windy day in Columbus.  Zach’s junior season was one for the record books as he won every race he ran in during the 2009 fall campaign.

As a team the Comets finished fourth accumulating 142 points.  Cleveland St. Ignatius placed first with 82 points followed by St. Xavier (118) and Sylvania Northview (137).   Matt Kahl also earned All-Ohio honors by finishing 17th overall.  Eric Hauser also placed very well, finishing 60th overall. Matt Kincaid, Chris Lehman, Matt Larcomb and Tate Honaker rounded out the 7 Mason finishers.

The Mason girls’ cross country team finished 8th overall at the state meet.  Jessica Harrison was the Comets’ top finisher in 19:26.91, good enough for 31st place.

Lesley is a member of the Bulldogs volleyball team.  She currently carries a G.P.A. of 4.0.

Damian is a member of the Bulldogs football team.  He currently holds a G.P.A. of 4.3.
